Dr. Joe Popinski is currently serving as Acting Assistant Vice President – IT (CISO) for the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rhode Island, a MS in Engineering Electrical from Stevens Institute of Technology, and a Ph. D. in Information Assurance and Security from The University of Fairfax. He has over 44 years of IT management and security experience recently retiring from Dynetics, Inc. in Huntsville as Director – Network Security and previously retiring from BellSouth as Computer Assets Protection Manager. He has spoken on numerous IT security topics at national seminars, meetings, training sessions, etc. including SANS, CSI, NetSec, ATMA, Murray State University, ASIS, and others. He is an Adjunct at the University of Alabama in Huntsville instructing in the Masters of Science in Information Assurance and Security and the Graduate Certificate in Information Assurance and Security programs since 2006. He was instrumental in establishing both UAH graduate programs and the NSA designation as a Center of Academic Excellence. He currently holds multiple professional certifications (CISSP, CISM, CPP, CFE) and professional society memberships (Sr. Member IEEE, Sr. Member ISSA, CSI, and others). His work has been published in several professional publications and society proceedings.
